Thickness of Grip vs Long Term Injury Issues July 4th 2022

Since that day in March 2019 am having a some issue with thinner grips like what is on the Stylus causing some hand pain.

Instead of living with it and therefore increasing chances of me reaching for the bottle of Acetaminophen there had to be a better option.

So thinking further about it now wondering about grip thickness. I do not think mtb grips for the majority like have changed in thickness. What I do know has changed is that since we will say about 1999-2000 mtb gloves especially full finger no longer have adding in the palm. Which when you consider that it would add some thickness to the grip even if you didn't consider it.

And considering that the Wideangle is running Wolftooth silicone grips which are thicker which have noticed has decreased palm ache and such. Well logically this shows at least to me that to address the issues hand and such wise need to both find a higher rise bar like Surly Sunrise as well as get a thicker silicone type grip for the Stylus.

Now while it is easy to say it is just the hands and that is it. A recent ride with the thin grips also had more aching in right shoulder and neck. Two areas that where injured when was hit. And it is difficult to know if the hand issues are causing the shoulder and neck o be more achy. Or is it the shoulder and neck causing the hand issues. Then of course wonder is this also helping cause issues in my back. There is no real way to know. However accepting the status quo of excess ach and pain is not good either. So a modification needs to be made to best manage this and that will be upgrading to thicker grips.

So first will be getting the grips and swapping them. Then next would be the higher rise bars. Shall see how this evolves.
