After being forced to used a knee brace 2 years ago. There was a bit of an issue that arose.
The issue was that despite being told it could be used against the skin. It wasn’t true as heat and sweat caused the brace to rub the skin off. When problem was presented to physio they said there was zilch that could be done.
So the initial solution was to use a calf sleeve that was designed for a completely different medical issue, DVT. While it wasn’t a great solution it did it’s job. But there was always the problem that it would get warm with that heavy material.
It took a while but this year came up with the next idea. Had a pair of knee high mtb socks from Paul’s Dirty Enduro MTB race. And one sock had holes under the heel and such. Well if cannot fix the under foot part. What about cutting the foot part off and use the calf part with the brace instead?
Went by the local seamstress shop to get a little help with preventing the cut area from coming apart slowly. Quick simple and easily done.
Next days use would be the test if this essentially recycled and re-purposed sock part. And the first thing to note was that it didn’t change how tight the knee brace straps needed to be. And readily admit it was easier to get on than the previous incarnation.
And verdict after the ride. Worked well. Not only was it not as hot as the previous calf sleeve but wasn’t as restricting as the more heavy duty one used for the last year. It would do the job.
This new solution to what was previously slowly becoming a bad knee brace issue works and is simple. Of course only have one right now and could use a few more. But currently don’t have any other long socks with holes. And don’t want to just cut up perfectly usable long socks either. Wonder if anyone I know has by that are in that state? It would be good if could find more.
