Dirtbag Mule Enduro Bro Waist Pack - What Carried In/On During Trans Can and Bell Line Rd Loop

When did the Trans Can and Bell Line Rd Loop up at Sharbot Lake. Decided that would use the Old Coast Mountain Enduro Bro Waist pack that have been slowly improving over time. Kind of a Dirtbag version of the Camelbak Mule Waist Pack.

Trans Can and Bell Line Rd Loop- Sharbot Lake Sept 30th 2024

Will share the mods in a another piece in future as this time just for fun am looking at what was in or on it the Dirtbag Mule. Also before anyone asks the spare tubes are strapped to two places on the Rootdown as well as the mini tools.

Honestly with one piece of gear for another swapped and one thing added to that I put into the DIY Mule was the same stuff put into a smaller one used for shorter rides.

While didn't expect to need it still packed the old Rocky Mtn Bikes vest. You know just in case. Better to have not needed then have needed it and not have it.

A pair of old Ice Tools DH Tire levers because was done long ago fighting to get tires off and on wheels while involuntarily donating blood to the local blood sucker population.

Almost 30 year old Cold Steel folding knife - never know if you need to cut a Cheesecake.

Mini pump- eventually will be mounted on the Rootdown like on the Stylus.

Flask with 80 Proof Antiguan Rum

MSR Trail Shot water filter. Normally when it is just me have have a Life Straw in my kit. However with two of us better to have carried one that can be used for both of us. Did we need it no. However since started riding in more remote locations 7 years ago. Far better to again have if needed then not to have it and need it. Basically cheap insurance. Keep it in an old compressible  jacket stuff sack to protect it from other gear.

Ziploc of non white napkins for if need bathroom in the woods. Brown colour blends in and doesn't say look here like white does.

That is it What carried in the Dirtbag Mule Waistpack. Nothing spectacular just the basic stuff carried, None of what was carried was needed this ride fortunately. Just a good ride and day out.

Gear Wishlist for 2025- Dream List Maybe

With winter coming comes the thoughts of gear wish for for 2025. Well also with a birthday and Christmas coming it is kind of a list for that too.

The recent ride I did with a friend had me thinking of changes to the Rootdown's handlebar set up.

Trans Can and Bell Line Rd Loop- Sharbot Lake Sept 30th 2024

Specifically looking at working around long term injury effects. And to decrease the chance of it acting up especially the lower back and shoulder. While looking at options and other ways to adapt came upon the Wren Perseverance Bar. And for what use the Rootdown for this will work.

Wren Perseverance Bar

https://www.surface604bikes.ca/products/wren-perseverance-adventure-flatbar

With me in the last couple of years seeking peaks or high points in Ontario near Kingston. Have a few times wanted a way to carry the bike while hoofing it through some sections as well as climbs. Like the ones found in the Combermere area.

Hookabike

Readily admit could use a new lighter pack. Something have been considering to lighten things especially long term injury adaptation wise specifically on the mtb. Though should consider

Portero Roll Top Backpack

Oveja Negra Ebay

Of course the day hiking choice,

HMG Daybreak 17

or

Elevate 22

One of those things you add to a gear wish list as in my case is a reminder of happier times before maimed by a driver.

Classic Chromag TRL

Of course something for the Ute since the first one got in 2017 is nearing it's end of life..

Sons Of Smokey Heavy Duty Trail Bag

And of course the trail maintenance wish for..

Trailboss 13" Saw

14" Handle Segment

YUKA 240 PULL SAW

And a couple of little things..

Freehub Disassembly Tool

OneTigris Hammock Under Quilt

And ultimate..

Mini Truck

Sure, have more like anyone and of course finishing all things injury insurance wise is one However this was sort of the dream gear wish list type thing. Especially with Christmas and a birthday coming one could call this the wish list for that. However seriously it is a wish list that maybe if things workout that can get some of it acquired before Spring starts.

Night Ride of Northern Lights- Oct 10th and 11th 2024

The night of Oct 10th/11th had a rare occurrence in Kingston. That occurrence was a solar storm powerful enough that despite the local light pollution one could see the Northern Lights. After watching them earlier out on the street out front.

Night Ride Of Solar Storm/Northern Lights

On a whim geared up and went for a wee night ride and headed to the Backyard Trails to see what one could see from the woods. Easy spin in to the Dirt Camp.

Turned off the bike lights and wasn't disappointed to see what I saw. I won't type much as it was more an easy night ride to a spot in the Backyard Trails to see the second big local event after the Solar Eclipse.

After sometime watching the Northern Lights show and getting photos. The temps had dropped a little bit and was starting to chill so time to head home. And just before headed out on a whim turned on the helmet light and took a photo while looking towards the direction the Northern Lights where coming from. And could see how bright they are in the sky even with the bright helmet light on.

Rode home and had a bonus extra little ride and adventure to add in for the year. Which is a good thing after the last 5 years.

Knee Braces, Fear , Gas Lighting, and Surgeon Instructions- Oct 8th 2024

On September 1st during the Big Dirty Trenton Peak Bagging Ride after bagging the the 4th high point or peak of the ride. And while riding between the 4th and 5th highpoint was thinking about the knee brace and fear of the last 5 years.

Big Dirty Trenton Peak Bagging Ride- 7 Peaks September 1st 2024

With having got my self confidence up enough to video and share myself. Decided to while transitioning between the 4th and 5th high point to record what was thinking. It was an attempt to keep a record of what was thinking about the last 5 years especially around the knee brace post surgery.

While I think the video says it best. There is a bit should add to it all. After major knee surgery July 28th 2022 and the months of healing and recovery time. When finally early 2023 got my long term medical instructions from the Orthopedic Surgeon. In terms of knee brace he advised to use as needed and when finally saw his written instructions which said use the brace if felt needed to. Sure it sounded good on paper.

The reality was that after 3 years 4 months and 24 days of being gas lighted, bullied, dismissed, threatened, and everything else done by insurance and others. I was fearful and paranoid of what would happen if by chance things went wrong. While the surgeon said use the knee brace as needed thanks to the threats and such by insurance. Was fearful that if wasn't using the brace they would then claim according to their interpretation of surgeon's instructions that I was to have been wearing the knee brace riding mtb at all times.

How bad was it? Best example was having a major anxiety attack when went to do squats with weights and hadn't put on the brace yet. Well had a Anxiety attack of level 8. All the threats and such had me fearful of what they could do.

Because of that it has taken two years to get my brain to be less fearful and protective. To be less fearful of actually following Dr Bardana's long term medical instructions. After talking with my physiotherapist who said all I could do is wait to let my brain get to the point it is at now. It has taken a lot longer then it should have to get to this point where am not as fearful to wear the knee brace less while riding trails.

And now that am in a better place to look at things. I know now that all the  being gas lighted, bullied, dismissed, threatened, and everything else by insurance hindered my progress post surgery. That it did nothing to support my efforts to improve and get closer to some level of healthier. And that created a mindset of fear that hindered moving to the next phase of post major knee surgery.

While am glad that have reached the point where am way less fearful and paranoid about the brace. Wear it way way less.  And can finally follow Dr Bardana's long term medical instructions. I really would have liked to not have added the gas lighting, threats, and bullying to the challenges of working on things post major knee surgery.

Trans Can and Bell Line Rd Loop- Sharbot Lake Sept 30th 2024

A few weeks ago while texting back and forth about gravel type rides could do in future. My friend shared a route that was on Ride With GPS that started in Sharbot Lake. And said wanted to do it.

C. Old Frontenac Road GF - Gravel 92%

After a bit of planning and looking at maps waited till the opportunity came up that could go and do it. Monday it did weather wise and heading north in the Ute we went.  Up early and on the road north...well 0900 hrs for me is early. After an hour got to Railway Heritage Park where would park as well as start and finish the ride at. Unloaded, got organized, and headed out for Arden via the Trans Canada Trail heading west.

It would be about 22km to Arden and the mid ride stop at the C4 Country Convenience. The Trans Canada from Sharbot Lake to Arden was the usual rail type trail. Gravel in various forms dry, some looser gravel, and of course the sections where they added material to fix whatever the issue was.

On the way we spotted 4-5 Blue Heron's hunting in the lakes and swamps near the trail. One spotted maybe 5 m away from the side of the trail. Very cool moment. Unfortunately the Heron took off a second after stopped so no photo.

And for this ride I did remember to bring back the old 2003 ultra endurance secret. That being a gel flask filled with standard issue Maple Syrup with salt added. From the time before energy gels became more prevalent and before some one made disposable tubes doing it.

After 22km arrived at Arden and the C4 Country Convenience for a mid ride treat and rest for a wee bit.

A few times during the ride I was thinking of a future handlebar swap for next year. As was thinking of  a set up that has my interest. Which as the ride progressed a few times was thinking of it. More on that later.

And yes there was cake. Later after got home found out that the lady owner of C4 Country Convenience is the mother of a Canadian Soldier. Cake was good.

After the snack and bit of a break it was off for the next part of the route. Price Rd all the way to Mountain Grove Rd.

At the junction of Price Rd and Mountain Grove Rd was the nearby junction with Highway 7. Here because the nearby Swamp Rd which in theory was passable reality is it is not. It is overgrown and sections are flooded. And since ATV's use it one never knows how deep the water could be.

So took the gravel shoulder  heading east on Highway 7 to Frontenac Rd 2 km away.  We did ok for the 2 km despite it not being level like a gravel road or rail trail.  After 2 km we arrived at Frontenac Rd and headed on Bell Line Rd.

Bell Line Rd while starting off gradual was only teasing and revealed itself. Revealed that the road was predominantly lots of up and down. Or at least seemed to be as this road had almost all of the climbing it seemed for the loop.

After crossing Road 509 continued along for a bit longer till reached the junction of Bell Line Rd and the K&P trail. Which meant the end of the ups and downs of the Bell Line Rd section and back to the flatter riding of the rail trail. With of course the periodic challenge of trail dust and loose gravel

Though can say that the materiel used on these north sections of the K&P trail is far better than the stuff the City of Kingston Public Works uses on their sections of the K&P.

At Highway 7 the trail goes under it via a tunnel. Which was kind of cool to ride through. Glad they did this as it makes using the trail much easier and obviously safer.

After a bit more riding we returned to the Railway Heritage Park and the Ute. With the route done and within the rough estimate time thought it would take. Guesstimated it would take 4 hours. It took 3 hours and 19 minutes to ride roughly 52.74 km. Which by the way would make this the longest ride have done since major knee surgery July 28th 2022.

After finishing and usual post ride recovery bit of a rest to get in some fluids.  Always a good idea to relax for a wee bit before driving anywhere after a good ride. Then got the bikes and gear packed into the Ute to head for a wee bit of food at the Kick and Push Brewery.

Bacon Cheeseburger and a Beer hanging out post ride is definitely a change from the usual post ride eating and hanging out. Usual being tail gate style in some gravel parking lot.

So overall good day and adventure with a friend riding something new. That also was pushing a wee bit the physical side of things since surgery and was after two years. The first long ride past 50k since that day.
